LUNCH BAGS OF LOVE

Rocky Point Students Craft Care Packages for Soldiers at Walter Reed Army Medical Center

In an ongoing effort to reach out to veterans, second grade students in Ms. Stacy Iberger’s class at Frank J. Carasiti Elementary School in the Rocky Point School District decorated and filled care packages for the soldiers in Afghanistan and Iraq. The program is called Lunch Bags of Love, and students received help filling their care packages from local veterans, parents, and United States Congressman Timothy Bishop.

Students were instructed to write a letter to the soldiers, thanking them for sacrifices made for their country. The paper bags were then lovingly decorated with hearts and patriotic themes and stuffed with valentine candy, pencils, soap and other toiletries, and, of course, much affection and appreciation. Parents and students donated the items collected for the packages.

Congressman Bishop remarked that programs such as Lunch Bags of Love are extremely important. “A program like Lunch Bags of Love certainly raises students’ awareness that people are making sacrifices on behalf of all of us,” he commented.

A student explained that she enjoyed making the care packages for the soldiers and disclosed what she had written in her letter to the soldiers. “I thanked them for helping keep us safe,” she stated.
